My 2020 Goals

First post of the year, got to post the goals to give myself a little bit of direction in 2020.  I do well when things are written down.  Helps me keep my focus on what is important for my collection.  I came up with three goals that I am going to try my best to achieve. 

First Goal: No new sets from packs 

I was really tempted to go with zero sets, but then there is the 2020 Topps Heritage set, which will be based on the 1971 Topps set.  I was not around to collect the 1971 Topps set when it was originally released, but I have spent my 30+ years collecting trying to assemble as many cards I can from that set.  I am not spending money on a box of Heritage cards, just going to buy a set off of Ebay.  I will probably buy a couple packs from Target or Wal-Mart along the way too.

Maybe there will be something else that will catch my eye.  I like opening packs of cards too, but I am trying to pair down my card collection at this point.  Really, I do not need to add a few thousand cards. 

Second Goal: More Durham Bulls and Cardinals Single Cards 

This my most successful goal last year, so I am going to keep this for 2020, but I am going to add a little bit more specificity in my description.  Narrow the focus a bit since there are tons of different cards for each of those teams. 

I have a lot of new Cardinals, and I have a lot of vintage cards.  I am missing oddballs, and a bunch of stuff from the mid 1990s.  Some of the cards that I would like to add are former Cardinals who are not in Cardinals uniforms on the cards. 

For example.....

This was a great Mark McGwire card back in the day.  In 1994 was I collecting Mark McGwire cards?  Nope, but I picked one up one up last year.  These are the types of cards that I want to add in 2020 for my Cardinals collection.  

My Durham Bulls collection is different.  I have a ton of modern Durham Bulls.  I moved here in 2005, and I think I have all the team sets.  Plenty of single cards of the players who appeared for the team too.  I also had little trouble going back and finding many of the players from the Braves years of the Durham Bulls, which were the 1980s and 1990s.  

The Durham Bulls started in 1902.  There are a lot of good players with baseball cards out there.  I am trying to track them down.  Some are really expensive, a stretch.  Think 1920s and earlier.  Others are much more affordable and easier to track down.  

Again, this was my most successful goal from last year.  I think that I can duplicate my success again in 2020. 

Goal Three: More Posts About Sorting 


Who remembers when I used to make posts about sorting out cards?  I used to do them all the time.  It's true.  Look at how my card closet looked back in the day. 

I only wished it looked that neat nowadays.  I took my boxes, sorted by team, a part a few years back and started sorting out my cards by sets.  I made posts about sorting out the different sets along the way.  Fun times.  

Sorting out all of those sets ended up creating a giant doubles table. 

That's solid across a five foot desk. 

There were also parts of my collection that appeared to be actually organized.  Like my boxes of autographs.   Always neat, no matter. 

I work full time.  I have a wife, two kids, and a Betta fish.  I am slightly ADD.  I also do not spend my days and nights sorting cards.  It's always a work in progress.  Posting about sorting used to make me a little bit more motivated to accomplish things and move my collection forward.
