This long time card collector felt a little bit slow that day. Today it got worse. I mentioned in my latest post that I made a trip into my local card shop and bought a huge stack of Ginters to mix in with my commons from my box in hopes of completing a set. There was one card from my first box which was annoying me as I sorted.
Desmond Jennings. I had all of the cards sorted into numerical order, but it appeared that Desmond Jennings had no number on the back of his card. I immediately attributed the lack of number to the sloppiness can be Topps and just put him on the bottom of the stack. I sorted in all of my new cards, but Desmond was eating at me. I am missing several cards from the set still, so I decided I would figure out which hole Desmond was supposed to fill in the set. Here's the blank back.
It took about thirty seconds after Google searching Desmond Jennings 2014 Allen Ginter to find out that he had a card variation with no number. I was immediately slightly annoyed at myself for not looking this card up a little earlier and figuring out the deal with the missing number. So, it looks like my box, which started out as three relic cards, then three relics and short print, has turned into three relics and two short prints.
Lessons learned: I should have listened to myself and combed through the cards and the checklist better a few weeks ago when I first learned that I had missed cards. Did anyone sign in lemon juice?
I don't think it's a variation, rather, all copies are unnumbered like that. Most people are assuming it has something to do with the Ginter code. but who knows?
ReplyDeleteThe official checklist at Topps has Jennings as card 114 and there are listings on Ebay which appear to be a regular version of this card. I wonder if the listers are assuming the card number is there.....
DeleteI was told when I posted this card that "all of them are like that", meaning no number on the back.

DeleteIt makes me wonder how many short prints or variations I've given away over the years. Oh well... my loss is someone else's gain. Congratulations on catching them.
